6 Factors You Can Do to Reduce the Risk of Cancer

In 2018, an estimated 266,120 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the United States along with 63,960 new cases of non-invasive breast cancer. Lung cancer is the second most common form of cancer and colorectal cancer is third among white women. For all women, the fourth leading cancer is cancer of the uterus. While those numbers are jarring, treatments, cures in some forms of the disease and more importantly techniques to reduce cancer risk are improving every day.

According to a new book “Anti-Cancer Living: Transform Your Life and Health with the Mix of Six”, you can reduce cancer risk and support treatment by focusing on six key areas of health and wellness.

The book is co-authored by two distinguished experts in the field of cancer research:

Lorenzo Cohen, PhD is a Richard E. Haynes Distinguished Professor in Clinical Cancer Prevention and director of the Integrative Medicine Program at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. He is on the board of the Academic Consortium for Integrative Medicine and Health and is a founding member and past president of the Society for Integrative Oncology. Dr. Cohen has published more than 125 scientific articles in top medical journals and has edited two books on integrative medicine for cancer care.

Alison Jefferies, MEd has worked extensively as an educator. She is a former president of the MD Anderson Cancer Center Faculty and Family Organization and works closely with Lorenzo Cohen to foster health and wellness in individuals and their communities.

The book details the scientific data on the link between lifestyle, environmental factors and cancer risk which has been accumulating at an accelerated rate over the past decade. The authors point out that patients and doctors included do not realize that changes in our daily choices and habits can improve quality of life, increase the chances of survival and aid in the healing process for those with a cancer diagnosis. The authors based their book on the ideas pioneered in David Servan-Schreiber’s “Anticancer: A New Way of Life” (published in 2017) and became the basis for their research study at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

The “Mix of Six,” as Cohen and Jefferies explain in the book are six factors that can greatly reduce the risk of developing cancer.

• Building social and emotional support
• Managing stress
• Improving sleep
• Regular exercise
• Healthy diet
• Minimizing exposure to environmental toxins

While each factor plays an independent role, the synergy created by all six factors can radically transform health and delay or prevent many cancers from developing, support conventional treatments and significantly improve quality of life.
