Remembering Arthur Miles on this Father’s Day

On this Father’s Day a loving memory of my Dad, Arthur Miles (1920-2007) Broadcaster Armed Forces Radio, Sarasota Radio Reading Service WUSF. He was an officer of the Dime Savings Bank of NY beginning in 1938. In 1955 he was elevated to officer rank with the title of Assistant Auditor, becoming Assistant Vice-President in 1958, Vice-President in 1964, Senior Vice-President in 1966, Senior Vice-President and Assistant Treasurer in 1968, Senior Vice-President and Treasurer in 1971, Executive Vice-President and Treasurer in 1975 and Senior Vice-President and Treasurer in 1978. He served on the New York City Financial Liason Committee, Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences, The Cultural Institutions Retirement System and National Treasurer of Alcoholics Anonymous. He was a member of the Broadcast Pioneers. He was a kind and generous man and most of all a great Dad. We miss you and love you.

Former Oriole and World Series Champion Scott McGregor will visit with Sarasota campers

(Sarasota, FL) Former Baltimore Orioles pitcher Scott McGregor will talk to summer campers about sportsmanship at Sarasota County’s Summer Camp at Laurel Park, 509 Collins Road, Laurel, on Monday, June 16, from noon to 1 p.m.

Approximately 130 campers will hear McGregor talk about why having respect for others and themselves is an important part of achieving success.

McGregor spent all 13 years of his major league career as a left-handed pitcher with the Orioles, winning 138 games with a lifetime earned run average (ERA) of 3.99. He was inducted into the Orioles Hall of Fame in 1990 and ranks among the club’s all-time leaders in wins (138), innings pitched (2141.1), shutouts (23), games (356) and strikeouts (904).

Among the many highlights of McGregor’s career was winning 20 games in 1980 and pitching a shutout in Game 5 of the 1983 World Series when the Orioles defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, four games to one.

Sarasota County Parks and Recreation’s summer camp program hosts more than 3000 children each year. The day camps feature weekly themes that allow campers to have fun, make friends and enjoy new experiences with physical activities, creative arts, science and nature, and safety and wellness events.

CBS Sports Announces NFL Broadcast Teams for 2014 Season

(New York, N.Y.) The CBS Television Network will begin its 55th year of broadcasting the NFL with Jim Nantz, Phil Simms and Tracy Wolfson leading THE NFL ON CBS into the Network’s 2014 NFL season. Nantz, Simms and Wolfson will call the full slate of Thursday Night Football games on CBS and the NFL Network, along with selected Sunday games on CBS. Sean McManus, Chairman, CBS Sports, and Executive Producer, THE NFL ON CBS, announced today several changes to the 2014 announcer line-up along with the complete list of broadcast pairings.

Ian Eagle and Dan Fouts have been named THE NFL ON CBS’s No. 2 announce team and will call the network’s top game on Sundays when Nantz and Simms do not call a game.

Wolfson, who served as the Network’s lead college football reporter for the past 10 years, will join the lead announce team of Nantz and Simms as THE NFL ON CBS lead reporter. In addition to Wolfson, THE NFL ON CBS will use additional sideline reporters during the season including Jenny Dell and Evan Washburn.

Other pairings this season include Greg Gumbel teaming up with newcomer Trent Green, Kevin Harlan with Rich Gannon, Spero Dedes with Solomon Wilcots, and Andrew Catalon forming a three-man booth with Steve Tasker and Steve Beuerlein.

James Brown once again will anchor the CBS Television Network’s pre-game studio show, THE NFL TODAY, along with analysts Boomer Esiason, Bill Cowher, and newcomers Tony Gonzalez and Bart Scott, from the CBS Broadcast Center in New York City. Jason La Canfora will continue to serve as the “NFL Insider.”

Baltimore Orioles to Host Prospect Wire Florida State Finals in Sarasota this Weekend

(Sarasota, FL) Thousands of youth baseball players and their families will converge on the Sarasota region this weekend for the 2014 Prospect Wire Florida State Finals tournament, with approximately half of the games to be played at venues managed by the Orioles. Facilities at Ed Smith Stadium and the Buck O’Neill Baseball Complex at Twin Lakes Park will be buzzing with activity from Friday evening, June 6 through Wednesday, June 11.

This is the fourth year Prospect Wire has held the tournament in Sarasota. According to Visit Sarasota County, the tournament generated a $2.5-million economic impact for the Sarasota-Manatee-Charlotte region in 2013 with approximately 110 teams participating. This year, the impact year could be even greater as 130 teams are expected to attend.

In addition to Sarasota facilities managed by the Orioles, the tournament will use venues in Manatee and Charlotte counties.
